Initially, the client opted for an Italian-made circular connector, used for on-vehicle bill printing machine power supply, with a typical lead time (L/T) of 30 weeks. Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the delivery schedule became even more uncontrollable. In order to ensure delivery, after extensive communication with the client and understanding their application requirements, we designed a compatible alternative connection scheme that circumvents patent issues. This has shortened the L/T to 2 weeks and reduced material costs by 30%. We have helped the client reduce their inventory and save procurement costs.

During the initial design phase, the client selected a similar connector from a renowned peer. However, during detailed design, they discovered that the chosen connector was not waterproof and the current per pin did not meet the application requirements. To address the client’s challenges, without altering the connector’s exterior dimensions or PCB layout, we redesigned the housing to accommodate a silicone seal, making it easy to pot the base of the terminal after installation, thus solving the waterproofing issue. We used a highly conductive alloy for the terminal, increasing the current per pin and overcoming the issue of the current not meeting application requirements. We also tin-plated the terminal to enhance the connector’s insertion and extraction lifespan, boosting connection reliability and ultimately enhancing end-user satisfaction.
